Each year, 1.35 million people lose their lives in road crashes across the world. Among the world’s most affected regions is Southeast Asia, where rapid motorization has been accompanied by some of the world’s highest rates of road traffic deaths. In the region, motorcycle drivers represent the most vulnerable road users, with riders of motorized 2-3 wheelers composing 43% of the region’s road crash deaths.

Myanmar is one country that demonstrates an urgent need for comprehensive road safety interventions and solutions, with 10,540 lives lost each year on the country’s roads, according to AIP Foundation. In Myanmar, motorcycles are a dominant means of transport, but helmet use rates remain worryingly low.

Despite the life-saving benefit of proper helmet use, only 32% of Myanmar’s motorcycle drivers and 27% of its passengers were found to wear helmet. A 2019 study of 1,462 child motorcycle passengers in Myanmar also found that only 11% of the children observed were wearing helmets, pointing out the severe risk that children face every day while on the roads.

OUR PARTNER

We are collaborating with AIP Foundation to propose a comprehensive road safety intervention targeting Myanmar’s most vulnerable road users, including child passengers and young, inexperienced drivers on motorcycles, to prevent road crash injuries and fatalities. The intervention will also establish a road safety network in order to build cross-sector collaboration for the development and enforcement of life-saving road safety policies.

The proposed intervention leverages twenty years of AIP Foundation experience in implementing road safety initiatives across Asia and Africa, as well as a country-specific knowledge and expertise in Myanmar, which AIP Foundation has developed since in the country in 2017.

The programme aims to improve road safety through four mutually reinforcing components:

  1. School-based distribution of quality helmets and road safety education to students and teachers to increase helmet use at target schools in high-risk traffic environments.
  2. Public awareness campaigns, which promote key road safety behaviours in target communities, including motorcycle, helmet use for drivers and passengers.
  3. Road safety educational workshops that will be delivered at universities, NGOs, governments, and private corporations to develop the knowledge and capacity of participants.
  4. Development and launch of a road safety network and youth empowerment activities to coordinate Road Safety Policies and Regulations. Youth Ambassadors from target universities are engaged in the development of road safety policies directly impacting their safety as a vulnerable road user group.
