APROQUEN
Precaution, Prevention & Response: A Comprehensive Approach to Burn Prevention
APROQUEN, Nicaragua
Accidental burns are one of the most common causes of death by accident in developing countries in the Latin American region. The majority of victims are children – most under the age of five – often coming from low-income families who cannot afford the expensive and specialized medical treatments required for burn injuries.
From 2017 to 2023, the Puma Energy Foundation supported the pilot and scaling of APROQUEN’s program on burn prevention, aimed at tackling a primary cause of burn incidents: lack of understanding of risk factors and misconceptions on first aid measures.
The burn-prevention program includes training for parents, schoolteachers, community leaders and children, as well as awareness-raising through social media campaigns.
Following the successfully first two phases of the program, the Puma Energy Foundation has renewed its partnership for a further three years (2024-2027) to help APROQUEN consolidate and expand its burn prevention education program across Central America.
As the only documented burn prevention education program in Latin America, APROQUEN will share its wealth of experience in burn prevention with peer organizations in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
At the same time, APROQUEN will reinforce its presence in Nicaragua, by providing a further 8,100 adults and children with burn prevention education and extending its social media information campaigns.
