Amend, Sub-Saharan Africa

By 2030, road traffic injury (RTI) is forecast to be the fifth largest killer worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa has the world’s most dangerous roads, with RTI rates increasing as roads are built and vehicles are imported into the continent.

The non-governmental organisation Amend seeks to offset the negative consequences of what is otherwise a positive economic and social development. They deliver tailored road safety education, visibility enhancement (reflector-enhanced schoolbags), and safe infrastructure around schools.

Key Achievements Of Amend

Child pedestrians are among the highest-risk groups in Africa for road traffic injury. The vast majority of schoolchildren in urban Africa walk to school, and they usually do so unaccompanied. A child in Africa is twice as likely to die on the roads as a child in any other region.

The Puma Energy Foundation is supporting Amend in a three-year programme (2017-2019) to install infrastructure around schools in 10 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa where children are at extremely high risk of road traffic injury. This infrastructure includes speed bumps, sidewalks, signage, rumble strips, zebra crossings and bollards.
